Lima "The City of Kings"

Lima nearly 500 years ago, the Spanish Conqueror Francisco Pizzaro destroyed one of the most highly advanced civilizations that has ever existed. Arriving Peru in September of 1532, it took him only two short months to capture and later killing the leader of the Inca Empire, Atahuallpa. Having control of the Incas, Pizarro set out and looted the empire of all its gold. With the riches he built the city of Lima in 1535 which became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Still to this day, you can see the Colonial Lima that was built during the Conquistadores all but friendly arrival into this coastal region. Though most of the gold was melted down and shipped off to her majesty in Spain, there are still some precious artifacts that were undiscovered and can be viewed in Lima's Gold Museum. If any thanks can be given to the greedy Spanish invaders, it would be since they found little or no interest in the pottery work of the Incas. Fortunately, thousands of ceramic pieces were untouched and had no value to the looting invaders of the new found land. Today you can see more than 45,000 of these magnificently crafted pieces of art at the Larco Herrera Museum. We highly recommend that you take a few hours to visit either or both of these museums to get a better understanding of the craftsmanship of Peru's forgotten Pre-Columbian Civilizations. If your taste for archaeology has not quite yet been sufficed, there is the Pachacamac site which dates back over 1000 years and is a short distance from Lima. We recommend to try to spend minimully 1 day while "passing" in and out of Lima. This can either be accomplished before or after your main portion of the trip.

  • The Nazca Lines ( 1 day )
  • Morning ( 6:15 a.m. ) you will be met and transferred by Cruz del Sur tour bus departing at 6:30 a.m. where you will travel 160 miles on the Pan American Highway until you arrive ( 10:30 a.m. ) the Bay of Paracas. Here you will check into the local San Andres Airport and the wait for your departure time on the local flight. After a short wait you will board your flight for your overflight of the Nazca Lines. ( note the total flight time takes about 1:50 minutes take off to touch down back at the local San Andres Airport. ) These desert drawings date back somewhere between 200 B.C. & 600 A.D. Here scientists & historians have been unable to explain the reason for the huge trapezoids, triangles, rectangles & quadrangles that stretch across miles of desert plain. The theories for these mysterious geo-glyphics left behind by the Nazca Indians range from, the reading of the constellations to weather forecasting and even ancient landing strips for space ships from some other planet. Though we may never find the true reason for these incredible pieces of art that are just as mysterious as the civilization that made them, your abilities to get a birds eye view, such as the ancient visitors may have, lets you form your own idea on their purpose to the Indians of the Nazca plain. Afterwards time is available for a lunch nearby. ( not included ) Late afternoon depart by Cruz del Sur tour bus ( 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. ) for your return to Lima at ( 7:30 - 8:00 p.m. ) where you will be met and transferred to the airport or hotel.
