LARAS BASE CAMP
(3 Day / 2 Night)

Recently our TAMBO TOURS crew set out on a short expedition in the surrounding area where some hot springs, beautiful fauna and water fall is away from the tourists zone. While hiking around our guide wandered into a medium sized cave where we located several "pictroglyphs" of llamas painted high atop a wall. The location is remote and as well was undocumented until our TAMBO guide reported it back to us in 2003. We have kept it a secret until the final research was completed by a local museum crew. The paintings consist of two ( 2 sets ) of llamas standing side by side. ( one of 5 the other of 6. ) The origins are either Inca or pre - Inca and their findings lean to the latter. There was only one other previously documented finding similar to this in the area according to the local museum staff.

Day 1 - Cuzco - Laras
Morning you will be met by private car and guide until reaching a small town of Calca, where we begin to ascend into the northern area of the highlands chain before the Jungle region. Here you will we'll see different small towns and a variety of nature levels. The highest point that we will pass will be of approx.12000 feet. In the mid afternoon you will arrive to Lares about one hour down from the 12'000 ft. pass. Here our staff will set camp close to the hot springs or thermal pools for the night. ( CB/L/D ) ( camp )

Day 2 - Laras - Hot Springs
After breakfast, you will have the entire morning at leisure to relax in the thermal hot springs and take a short hike in the surrounding area. The fauna and scenery that exists in this area is breathtaking. After lunch the day will be dedicated to view the plentiful orchids and other plant life that is somewhat unique to this remote area. You can as well spend time fishing for local species of trout camp site will be near the thermal pools. Overnight in Laras. ( B/L/D ) ( camp )

Day 3 - Laras - Ollantaytambo - ( Cuzco or Machu Picchu )
Morning a last dip in the hot springs and enjoy the variety of beautiful orchid surroundings. Afterwards proceed by private car into the valley and continue to Ollantaytambo the oldest continuously habituated town of the Inca. Here there are several structures of importance to the Inca. At the top of the sixteen massive terraces are the ever impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo Fortress where it is known the Inca fought some of their strongest battles. The huge precisely carved stones were transported somehow by hundreds of men down one mountain range to the Ollantaytambo location and fitted perfectly to support a strategic fortress that has bared the test of time. There is as well the “silos” or grain mills that are directly adjacent to the fortress and were to have maintained thousands of pounds of grain for the Inca and its people. (B /L ) (Optional : overnight in Ollantaytambo, train to Machu Picchu or return to Cuzco.)
